Understanding the function of melatonin
One of the most important hormones of the body is melatonin. This hormone influences the sleep cycle and the circadian rhythm. But that is only a rough description of melatonin’s function. Melatonin seems to have many other roles which scientists are only beginning to discover.
One of these functions is to “serve notice” to the body that it is time for adolescence. The output of melatonin drops around the time of adolescence, and it seems that this serves as a signal to the body to advance beyond the childhood stage to adolescence.
Melatonin also performs the role of an antioxidant, thus it has anti aging properties as cell oxidation is one of the leading causes of aging. Its antioxidant capability is much higher than that of vitamin C (another well known antioxidant).
Since melatonin is a pretty beneficial hormone, it may be of help with sleeping problems. However, being a hormone also means it should not be abused. It is best to learn the proper melatonin dosage for yourself and take regular breaks. Many people say they sleep better by taking some supplemental melatonin.
