Guide to American Flags

Published by KennyG at 10:53 pm under Articles

If there’s one symbol that sums up the American culture and values then it’s probably the American flag. Because American flags are so important to Americans there are a number of rules about how and where it should be used that you need to know before buying one. This article will provide you with a brief overview of some of the most well known rules regarding American flags although you should be aware of them all before looking for American flags for sale.

The American flag was first used during the American Revolution although it took on a different form during this time. While the 13 stripes were still a part of the design the English flag was used in the top corner instead of the current blue background and 50 stars.

The overall set of rules that are applied to the American flag is called the Flag Code. Knowing the Flag Code is essential when using the flag – especially if it’s in a public situation. However, you should always adhere to the flag code even if in a private situation.

For example, the Flag Code says that there must be a light source lighting the flag when it’s being used at all times. This can either be sunlight or some other source. Another example is that regular American flags should only be used during periods of good weather.

Other rules include the fact that the flag should never be lowered in the direction of any object or person. It should also never be flown upside down unless it’s to draw attention to someone in distress.

Americans take an immense amount of pride in their flag so when looking to buy one it’s important to keep this in mind. Make sure that your flag is always clean and that if it gets damaged it’s repaired before its next use.
