Raw Food Dog Diet Tips

Published by tobyfox at 10:29 pm under Articles

Less than a century ago, most dogs ate as wolves did. They consumed raw food, uncooked meat and bones. Research has exposed how closely dogs are interconnected to the wolf because of DNA comparisons. The divergence between them is a tiny one percent! Both dogs and wolves must have the enzymes and nutrients contained in untreated, unprepared, unprocessed food. Their teeth are designed to shred and crush up meat and bone. The enzymes in their short digestive track are able to handle dangerous bacteria such as salmonella.

A wolf’s natural diet has diversity. On some days the wolf fasts. On some days the menu may well comprise a raw egg. Occasionally, he and the pack members may feast on a deer, starting with the guts, working toward muscle, and then bone, all over a multi-day time frame. Even dogs who are given store bought canned and dry food can benefit from more variety. blend in some gizzards or turkey. Add a turkey neck or other soft bone once in a while.

An example of a raw food diet for dogs would include meaty, but soft boned entrees such as chicken wings and backs, and turkey necks. Other menus might be raw meat, gizzards, raw eggs, and pulpy vegetables. One of our dogs enjoys trips to our backyard garden to enjoy a side of kale. Just mix the vegetables in with the meat or dog food.

The raw food diet might not be for all dog owners, but once the benefits are considered, perhaps more owners would be willing to give their pooches a healthier diversity. Some of the advantages to consider are: better hydration, less ear infections, cleaner teeth, stronger immune system, fewer allergies, fewer anal gland disorders, and less doggy smell.

Do not feed your dog cooked bones. They are brittle and can fragment. If your dog has digestive problems or other persistent health conditions, discuss with your vet about the potential of placing your dog on a raw diet.
