Renaissance Clothes
If like myself I am sure that there are many people in todays world that would not have faired well back in the times of renaissance clothes. For a start my alarm goes off at a set time every morning which I then put on snooze a number of times till I have only a few minutes left to get up and get dressed, which for work is a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Now if I had to get dressed in the clothes that they wore back then, well I know for a fact that every day I would be late for work, especially if I had to put on a corset or a bodice.
Corsets and bodices are two different things, the corsets were often boned and shaped, they had strings on either side which were pulled in as tight as possible to give you like a hour glass figure, they were made out of stiff fabric which to me must have made it very uncomfortable to wear. Where as the bodice is more of a dress top, they are made to fit quite tight which then enhances your figure but at the same time still leaves enough room for you to be able to breathe, both of these garments are still used today.
Now the renaissance clothes for the men like the under garment for example, was no different to that of the ladies. some of the older men used to like to wear corsets to pull in or control there over expanding tummy’s. I would love to put my knee in the back of some of the older and grumpier generation of today and pull in the strings really tight, but I guess that is another story.
Now some of the renaissance clothes for younger men were short suits only reaching the knees, sometimes they were even shorter than that, they would wear pants which were of different colored fabrics, they would wear heel-less shoes and their heads would always be covered by a hat. The vest was heavily padded in the middle which was designed to look like a barrel shape, to give it the padding they used horse hair, and they would be charged a great deal of money for the thread.
The renaissance clothing for men also had stand-up collars’ or ruffs which they had added to their necklines, their coats or vests would be widened at the shoulders, again padded out to give them the square look. Thank God times have changed, I would not like having to iron renaissance clothes for a man in todays world.
