An Asthma Action Plan is a written document that many parents provide the school as part of their child asthma treatment protocol. It details what the school needs to do and whom to call. It’s like an emergency plan once a child’s asthma symptoms are observed.
What makes this an important document is that asthma treatment for children varies with the child’s age and the severity of the asthma symptoms. Generally, here is what’s your child asthma action plan should have:
Child’s name
Your name and phone numbers. This includes cellphone, house phone and work phone. Other family members or friends who are authorized to pick up your child in an emergency. Provide their phone numbers, too.
A list of the the triggers that bring about asthma symptoms and a list or step-by-step things the school needs to do as part the child asthma treatment that you’ve developed with his pediatrician.
Your child’s best peak flow meter reading so that they have a baseline to compare other readings with.
A list of all the medicines and dosing procedures for all the medicines your child take or can take. This should be kept updated whenever the doctor changes the medicine or the dosage. Asthma treatment for children change depending on how the child is receptive to medication. Be on top of this situation.
The name of the doctor you want the school to call and any pertinent information his office would need to process your child as quickly as possible.
The name and phone number of the local hospital you want them to bring your child if this particular asthma episode is bad.
