Diabetic Nutrition

Learning proper diabetic nutrition is part of managing diabetes type 2. Most people are referred to a registered dietician after being diagnosed so they can learn how to balance proportions and calories, as well as making better food choices.

One of the most important steps in diabetic nutrition is learning proper portion sizes. Until you are comfortable with serving sizes, you should measure all of your food. Invest in a few pairs of measuring cups and spoons that can be kept at home, work, or even in your car.

Diabetics should include large amounts of non-starchy vegetables like spinach, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, collards, tomatoes, and cauliflower in their diets. Limit the amount of starchy vegetables you eat because these quickly turn to sugar following digestion. Examples of starchy vegetables include rice, pasta, potatoes, pretzels, and tortillas.

Meat is not off limits, but choose lean cuts of beef, skinless chicken or turkey, and fish. When searching for a drink, water is the best choice because it has no effect on blood glucose levels. If you prefer milk, choose a low fat or no fat version. Avoid sugary drinks like soda.

Complete your meal with a small piece of fruit. Choose from oranges, plums, peaches, grapes, strawberries, apples, or even a small fruit salad. If choosing canned fruit, be sure to choose fruits packed in water, not syrup, and rinse before enjoying.
