How to Repair Your Toilet
Most people walk into a bathroom and see the porcelain fixtures and think nothing of it. They are not concerned that something may be wrong until the problems begin to present themselves. There is quite a bit more to toilet plumbing than just the fixtures that are visible to the eye. There are hoses and pipes, these pipes go on form miles underground in most cities.
Making an effective toilet repair on your own is possible if you know what to look for and where to look. One of the most common problems is leaking. This can be caused by anything from a crack in the bowl or tank to loose or damaged hoses. It is always best to fix a toilet as soon as you find there is a problem. The contaminated water poses a very real health threat.
A common toilet repair is the adjusting the float arm to stop the refilling process. The float arm is what controls the water coming into the tank if the arm is bent or out of position you will get that constantly running water that can be costly.
Another common repair is the refill tube. If this out of place you can reach in and reposition it to stop the leak. A bad tube can often be replaced. After purchasing the replacement simply remove the damaged piece and replace it with the new one.
If you have a faulty flush valve you have three choices. 1) Repair it 2) replace the ball and 3) install a new one. The first two options do not require that you have much plumbing knowledge. It is likely that deposits of calcium and lime have built up on the ball. By scrubbing the area with a steel wool you can remove those deposits. You may also just run down to the local hardware store and get a new ball. Unscrew the old one and screw on the new one. A very simply way to fix a toilet. The third option involves purchasing a kit and using tools.
