Solid State Starters
For heavy duty motors in industrial facilities, consider upgrading the motor and installing a solid state starter. These starters are often called “soft starters” because they help a motor start up with lower voltage to eliminate power surges. This reduces strain on the motor….but there’s another benefit. The electrical burden for the entire facility (distribution center, plant or factory, machine shop, etc.) can be drastically reduced. It also eliminates mechanical torque transients. And with flexibility features of solid state starters, the desired current can be selected that works best for the motor being used before actually starting it up.
With reduced voltage startups, the solid state starter can help save time and money while improving overall motor operation. There’s no need for moving contactors, so no more worry about shutting down a motor to replace these. Solid state starters can be used for various machinery such as grinders, presses, conveyors, car dumpers, rock crushers, and many other applications. Do a little research on solid state starters online to find the product that best matches your current motor. Even older industrial motors can perform much better with reduced voltage startups.
