Understanding family law and divorce law

Published by at 8:45 pm under Divorce,Family Law And Divorce,Law Legal

It’s common for a law firm to provide services for several practice areas. However, two of the most common areas of practice that are often thought of as the same are divorce and family law. Many times they are thought of as one and the same, and that is perhaps in part due to the fact that “divorce and family law” are so often presented in that exact format. Although they are certainly related in many ways, and very often overlap, they are distinctly different areas of practice.

Clearly, divorce law is fairly self-explanatory. It involves, strictly speaking, all areas of the divorce process. Things such as maintenance, (the politically correct term for alimony), property distribution, and child custody are divorce related. Family law, although many times would overlap many of the areas of divorce, it may not of necessity have to involve any area of divorce. Family law, as the name implys, concerns itself with issues relative to the family. Although this could be issues of custody and support, it could also be relative to those issues that have little to do with divorce. However, because the two areasp of practice overlap the a great extent, Divorce and Family Law will most like always be looked upon a one and the same.
