Web Handling Process – Importance of Tension Control
In a web handling operation, thin, flexible materials such as nonwoven material, foil, film and paper are steadily being moved from batch to continuous processing. The web usually starts and ends on a roll, or it might be made into die-cut pieces in certain applications. During the web handling process, it’s very important to maintain tension accuracy between the clamping points. When the material reaches the rewinder to be rolled back onto a roll, the web tension will affect whether or not the material rolls evenly and straightforward or in a way that causes the inner windings to be destroyed or reel telescoping to occur. Implementing a proper web tension control loop can help prevent damage to the material (wrinkling, deformation, breakage, etc.) thus reducing loss of time and profits during the web handling process.
