The Circadian Rhythm is most commonly referred to as the “Body Clock” – and, for a reason, too. These rhythms consist of a wide variety of changes that are physiological, psychological and behavioral that is generally based on a time span of approximately twenty four hours. Circadian rhythms are vital in determining human sleep patterns. The body’s master clock, or SCN, controls the production of melatonin,which is the hormone that makes you sleepy. It is located just above the optic nerve, which relays information from the eyes to the brain, the SCN receives information about the light around you. When there is less light, like at night the SCN tells the brain to make more melatonin so you get drowsy and can fall asleep.
