There’s actually been a study done called Organic Agriculture and the Global Food Supply that’s followed the problem for years and found that there is no reason why it can’t be done. It tells us what we always knew – small-time small-town farmers who farm their own land, and care about the environmental consequences of what they do can, all put together, feed more people than the disruptive practices of industrial agriculture. We don’t need genetically engineered crops for large-scale production, and we certainly don’t need tons of fertilizer and pesticides and machines to keep the world from going hungry and starving. To grow organic and to grow it well, we only need the dedication and the clarity that only the small farmer can bring to the table.

If it’s as simple as all that, why is it that we’ve come to believe all these years we need the massive organized agricultural system to keep the world fed? Well, apparently all that is just the scaremongering of the good folks over at the industrial farming industry. For instance, when they refer to organic food in their arguments against it, they try their best not to speak of the sensitive and knowledgeable farming techniques practiced today in this country by small farmers; they look at the low tech, poor quality farming practices of the Third World and try to point out how without lots of fertilizer and pesticides those uninitiated farmers couldn’t achieve achieve anything. The organic farming of the Michigan farmer involves a great deal of science, just no chemicals. Farmers like him try to understand the soil, the ecology of the local environment, and use help from other plants, natural manure and friendly animals and organisms to keep their soil rich, and their plants pest free. To grow organic is a pretty scientific endeavor. In the better parts of the world, educated farmers, more than 10 million of them, have been moving away from industrial farming and towards trying to grow organic, and they’ve managed to double output over the last 10 years.

It would be wonderful if we could just hear about these and not the scary stories about how the world will starve if we begin to farm the land in natural ways. For instance, if we raised livestock the natural way, we could easily step away from the E. coli epidemic that follows US beef everywhere it goes. You don’t need higher and higher doses of antibiotics to keep that down – you just need to keep cows out of industrial feedlots. Thanks to the dangerous use of weedicides and pesticides, we’re having to deal with super weeds and super pests these days. Farmers in India and the rest of Asia have tried and abandoned industrial practices; they knew how to give up early – they were poor and couldn’t afford to throw good money after bad like we are doing. Large numbers of farmers are returning to their roots, to grow organic, to be successful again. And there is good hope in that.

When they can, they’ll try to rip the weeds out by hand; but it just takes too much time and effort.

Farming and gardening in this country have turned full circle – to a time when no one had any weapon against weeds and pests other than their own to low-tech hands. Using super powerful herbicides will only result in poisoned plants, lower yields, and health problems. It all started 10 years ago in a farm and Delaware that grew soybeans. It was just one kind of superweed back then, and it seemed like they would find a way around it. All of a sudden though, everyone’s reporting gardening problems of this kind of a dozen varieties that affect every kind of garden plant and every kind of farm crop. At a time when everyone’s so enthusiastic about genetically modified soybeans, cotton and corn, seeing what happens when a plant is genetically modified (by nature in reaction to unnatural problems) should lend us a bit of caution.

It all began when Monsanto came up with a super toxic herbicide called Roundup about 20 years ago. No ordinary plant could withstand that kind of poison, and so to help, they offered genetically modified seeds called Roundup-ready seeds. They’ve just about cornered the market with them; except that now, weeds have turned Roundup-ready themselves through evolution, and farmers have no choice but to go back to weeding by hand. And these new weeds, horseweed and ragweed, have spread from the large-scale farms to our backyards, to our gardens – for supersize industrial scale gardening problems for all of us.

Our farms are already a real soup of petrochemical derived fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and whatnot. The company that’s behind all of this, Monsanto feels that there is one great answer to all the gardening problems and farming problems we have in this country – go extra super strong genetically modified. And of course you have to go to that company to buy those products all over again.

Today, there are many sources for free money, more typically called grants, and the key to getting a grant is writing a grant proposal. You can hire a professional, but if you’re like most small businesses, you just don’t have the money for one. That’s why you need the grant, to get money to afford such professionals. Fortunately, a grant proposal does not have to be written by a professional grant writer. If you paid attention to your English composition instructor in high school or your freshman year of college, and you’ve mastered that level, you’re already equipped to write a proposal yourself. You just need to follow the rules of good composition and you’re sure to succeed.

You’ll succeed in getting free money from the government as a grant if your proposal satisfies the government’s requirements for anyone who would receive a grant. This means that your proposal will meet the government’s own goals: education of the people, the promotion of small businesses, the furtherance of political integration to name a few. That’s why your grant proposal states in both the “Executive Summary”, the first section of your proposal, and the “Statement of Need” section the existence of a need that has a lot of room for satisfying solutions, one of which will be the project you’re proposing. In the “Executive Summary” portion you briefly state the social, political, or educational need that the government has already emphasized, and the particular need that give rise to your project, to the solution to that need that you’re proposing. This should be a genuine need, one that is real, that is called for, that is a demand. You are not creating a need, like a salesman who creates a need that really isn’t there. You will have carefully analyzed this need – how else can you develop a solution, your project – and will fully disclose the specifics of that need in the “Needs” section of your proposal. By the time the reader finished reading that section, he will be wanting a solution himself. Good salesmanship requires you to arouse a need, and in these two sections you will have your opportunity. Don’t waste it.

Having explicated the need, you’ll then indicate in the grant proposal “Executive Summary” a very brief description of your solution and, following the “Needs” section”, a detailed presentation of your project. In the project description section you’re going to present a description of the project, each point answering to the needs you have already aroused. You’ll show how your project will result in a total solution (though perhaps not exhaustive) to the need. Remember, your project is a solution, not a dream. It must be possible.

Then, briefly in the grant proposal summary and with details in the section, “Budget”, you’ll very specifically assign a dollar amount you require to pay for each requirement of the project. This will include facilities, personnel, professional costs, and any other cost that must be borne. Here, you’re telling them exactly how you intend to spend the money they grant. Be specific, be exhaustive. You’re not going to have a chance to ask them again with another grant proposal. This is it.

You’ll have one last chance, both in the summary and in the section, “Organization”, to tell the reader why you or your organization can make this project happen. Here, qualifications and experience apply. Tell them only what is relevant and why you or your organization can be trusted to see the project through. Don’t brag, be true.

Your proposal will conclude with a conclusion section. You’ve argued your case, now you summarize again, this time with the reader fully informed. Get you major points out there once again and conclude with confidence.

In addition to these sections, you are expected to layout the means by which you will be evaluating your progress. Here, you schedule out milestones.
A grant proposal is an exercise in composition. Stick to the principles of good composition and you’ll succeed in getting the grant that will start you or your company on the road of success.

The continent of Africa represents some of the world’s most impoverished and underdeveloped regions in the world. The site of frequent conflict and natural disasters, the people of Africa often find themselves in dire need of international aid. Aid to Africa takes on a multitude of form, and varies based on the source of the aid, the level of need, and the location where it is delivered. The process is far more complicated than it appears on the surface.

Initially, aid to Africa is distinguished by the form it takes on. For example, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank provide loans to developing countries, but these loans often come with major strings attached and high interest rates. These loans still qualify as aid to Africa. Other organizations are more charitable. For example, the Red Cross gives as much as they can, even in the face of violence. Still other organizations mean well, but end up causing problems. Aid to Africa is often made difficult by conflict occurring in the countries it is intended for. In the Greater Horn of Africa, conflict runs rampant. Between the genocide occurring in the Sudan and the wars being waged in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, the region is not a safe place for aid workers. This makes it tremendously hard to get the aid to the people who need it the most. Natural disasters also create their own road blocks, metaphorically speaking. In a lot of African countries, if you are not in a metropolitan area, the roads are in bad repair and best and non-existent at worst, making it next to impossible for aid workers to get to the people who need help.

However, even in a world where violence, nature or internal politics aren’t getting in the way of delivering aid to Africa, it is quite possible that the governments overseeing the countries will. Western nations delivering aid are often seen as imperialist, and trying to advance a political agenda. As a result, governments in Africa will often deny access to aid workers to the most needy parts of their country, which limits the scope of aid to Africa.

Aid to Africa is desperately needed, but it is also a convoluted process. The effectiveness of the aid often depends on who is giving it, where it is going, and who is receiving it. Hopefully, this process will become more simple in the future.
