Are you worried about loosing your landscape maintenance business if you transition to installing artificial grass? Don’t be the contractor that shies away from artificial lawn installations – driven by the fear that it may hurt your maintenance business – artificial lawn installations will occur – and your maintenance routes can be negatively impacted. Don’t be left behind! You can choose to develop a new revenue stream or simply wait for the old one to go away without any replacement.
Artificial turf opens doors to applications that were previously desired but not practical – such as pool surrounds, high traffic areas, dog runs, rooftops and eco-friendly paver applications.
Generically, artificial grass for landscaping will typically sell (installed) between $8 and $14 per square foot. Most pricing models demonstrate that an artificial grass installation pays for itself within 3 years.
Environmental advantages include:
* No fertilizers or pesticides
* Water conservation and reduced CO2 emissions
* Made from recyclable materials (backings and sub-bases) and gain LEED points!
Artificial grass – traditionally known as artificial turf or synthetic turf – has been around for over 4 decades. It had its birth in the Houston Astrodome in 1965! Artificial grass has gone in and out of favor through the years. It gained momentum in the late 70’s and early 80’s on European pitches but with the rise in joint impact, head, neck, and abrasion injuries coupled with poor ball performance, it was banned by FIFA and ultimately removed from playing fields. With the advent of 2nd generation artificial grass and synthetic turf playing fields in the early 1990’s and with improvements in artificial grass and artificial sports turf installation methodologies – resulting in better ball performance, better G-Max ratings (i.e. fewer injuries!), and a more realistic look – it once again became a reasonable alternative for sporting applications.
With the advent of latest generation artificial grasses and synthetic turfs – continued improvements in the artificial grass yarn extrusion processes, synthetic turf yarn designs, the use of Nylon (PA) and Polyethylene (PE) – to replace Polypropylene (PP) or “astro turf” like products – demand
began to develop in traditional landscaping applications. Today’s artificial grass lawn and synthetic sports turf products look so realistic they are nearly indistinguishable from natural grass – and provide a more consistent performance! Artificial grass is being installed in residential applications – front yards, back yards, personal putting greens, etc. Artificial grass is being installed in public and private playgrounds – as a less expensive alternative to poured-in-place rubber surfaces. We are seeing a growing demand for the installation of artificial grass lawns at/on commercial projects because of the LEED points that can be earned towards certification.
This has led to a new business opportunity for landscaping contractors! For landscape contractors to excel in this economy they need to begin offering more “green” alternatives and that begins with artificial grass and other “water friendly” design and installation options. It is a product with great margin! (much better than pavers and traditional landscape).
